The concept of a capsule wardrobe has been around for decades, but most advice about it focuses on minimalism for the sake of minimalism. I want to approach it differently. What if your capsule wardrobe was not just about having fewer clothes, but about having clothes that actually mean something?
What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile pieces that all work together. Instead of a closet stuffed with things you never wear, you have a curated selection of items you love and reach for again and again. Most capsule wardrobes contain between 25 and 40 pieces, including shoes and outerwear.
The math is compelling. If you have 30 pieces that all mix and match, you can create hundreds of unique outfits. Compare that to a closet of 100 items where only 20 percent get regular wear. More is not always more.
The Intentional Approach
Here is where I differ from most capsule wardrobe advice. I do not think you should start by throwing things away. I think you should start by asking yourself a question: who am I, and what do my clothes say about me?
If you value creativity, your wardrobe should reflect that. If you value faith, your wardrobe should reflect that. If you value sustainability, your wardrobe should reflect that. Your clothes are not just fabric. They are a daily declaration of your values.
Step 1: Define Your Values
Write down three to five values that matter most to you. For me, those are faith, creativity, sustainability, quality, and individuality. Everything in my wardrobe should connect to at least one of these values.
Step 2: Audit What You Have
Go through your closet and ask: does this reflect my values? Does this make me feel like myself? Have I worn this in the last three months? If the answer is no to all three, it might be time to let it go. Do not throw it away. Donate it, sell it, or find a way to repurpose it.
Step 3: Identify the Gaps
Once you know what you have, you can see what is missing. Maybe you have plenty of basics but nothing that makes you stand out. That is where one of a kind pieces come in. A single handmade tote or patchwork hoodie can transform your entire wardrobe because it becomes the piece that ties everything together.
Step 4: Invest Slowly
You do not need to build your dream wardrobe overnight. In fact, you should not. The whole point of intentional fashion is slowing down. Save up for pieces that matter. Wait for the right thing instead of settling for the fast thing. Every piece in your capsule wardrobe should feel like a deliberate choice, not an impulse.
Where Handmade Fits In
Handmade pieces are the perfect anchor for a capsule wardrobe because they are built to last, designed to be versatile, and impossible to find anywhere else. When you own something one of a kind, you never have the awkward moment of showing up wearing the same thing as someone else. Your wardrobe is yours and yours alone.
I have customers who tell me that their handmade piece is the thing they pack first for every trip. It is the item they reach for on days they want to feel confident. It is the piece that gets compliments from strangers. That is the power of owning something made with intention.
Quality Over Quantity, Always
A capsule wardrobe built on fast fashion will need to be replaced every season. A capsule wardrobe built on quality will last years. The cost per wear of a handmade piece that you wear weekly for two years is pennies. The cost per wear of a cheap top that falls apart after five washes is actually higher, even though the sticker price was lower.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
— Matthew 6:19
Quality is not about luxury. It is about stewardship. Taking care of what you have, choosing wisely, and not accumulating things that will end up in a landfill. That is the kind of intention that a capsule wardrobe is really about.
